Tarmac Surfacing Case Study August 2023
Tarmac surfacing is a common method used for resurfacing roads, car parks, driveways, and other paved surfaces. It involves applying a layer of asphalt (a mixture of bitumen and aggregates like sand, gravel, or crushed stone) to an existing surface to restore its quality, improve durability, and enhance functionality. In August 2023 VCNY Group Limited completed Tarmac Surfacing projects at Lister Hospital Stevenage following traffic flow and car park layout changes to the premise.
The process of completion included - Surface Preparation: The first step involved clearing the damaged areas of the road and removing redundant kerbs. This was completed by removing any loose materials, debris, and the top layer of the old surface. In certain areas, additional repairs were needed for the underlying base material before applying the new tarmac. Asphalt Mixture Selection: A dense-graded asphalt mixture was selected, which is suitable for heavy traffic areas and provides a smooth, durable surface. The mix was designed to ensure long-term performance, reducing the frequency of future repairs. Laying the Tarmac: The freshly mixed asphalt was delivered to the site in hot loads, allowing it to be poured onto the road while still pliable. A paver machine spread the asphalt mixture evenly across the road, ensuring the correct thickness. Compaction: After the asphalt was laid, large roller compactors were used to compress the material, eliminating air pockets and ensuring a smooth, even surface. The rolling process also helped to bond the layers of asphalt together for better performance. Surface Finishing: After compaction, the surface was smoothed using hand tools and a final pass with the roller. This ensured there were no uneven areas, and the road was ready for use. The road markings and signage were also reapplied after the asphalt cooled and set.
A final inspection was conducted to ensure the surface met all quality standards. This included checks for smoothness, compaction, and correct thickness. The project was a success and brought the business further projects with the NHS.
