Thursdays report- Aug 6th 2026 — and the Beat goes on— Clearer skies and more humid these past days- Light west at 2 4 kts seas calm some marine haze seaward- Wave Height 2.0 ft Dominant Wave Period 13 sec Mean Wave Direction SSE ( 166 deg true ) Water Temperature 74.7 °F working it’s way— up this way— terns were working-marking some smaller tuna — 10:11am Saw the plane circling around —-on the horizon looks like a giant bird school- we’re headed that way— 10:59 Saw you were stopped for a while—— yea it was all those big ones-11:24 Local report- as boats heading out of newport- half of em heading to the east end- the other half heading south to that warmer water 267/ 209/ 312/ 181 areas- what’s left in between the coverage — they found no bait at Newport’s bait barge- or limited what was there- nice sized 2 lb bonita at the harbor’s entrance— a few foot long greenback mackerel there- a short ride 170 degrees out of the harbor finds the blue water and the occasional kelp- most of them were empty holding 2 inch bait under them but a few — a few had 10- 20lb dorado under them- tough to get a bite- cut mackerel as a chunk bait has worked in the past- A check with the San Clemente Island’s Security’s web site shows SHOBA / inside lee and the Cove to be active for most of the weekend- Offshore traveling these day— might as well have a trolling lure out- whether it be a cedar plug, old fashioned tuna feather or a Nomad mad max- it’s worth the time and effort— there’s Yellowfin tuna, dorado and Yellowtail all on the troll- good luck— Wed’s report— Aug the 5 2026- Overcast again morning- seems a bit more- Very little wind 1-2-3 kts S/W
